O Ring Overview

What is an O-Ring?

An o-ring is a round, mechanical gasket designed to be seated in a groove and compressed during assembly between two or more parts, creating a seal at the interface. O-Rings are one of the most common types of seals because they’re inexpensive, reliable and have simple mounting requirements. Since they are known as one of the most important elements of machine design, o-rings may be used in static applications, where little range of motion is required. O-Rings may be used in dynamic applications, like rotating pump shafts and hydraulic cylinder positions.

O-Ring Characteristic Advantage 

(1) Excellent performance, high service life, is at least 5~10 times higher than the life of ordinary rubber sealing products, and even can maintain the same service life with the sealing matrix under some special conditions.

(2)  Widely used, is the hydraulic and pneumatic transmission system is the most widely used in a kind of seal, in the acid and alkali, oil resistance, wear resistance, chemical erosion and other complex environment can play an excellent shock absorption sealing effect.

(3) The friction resistance is small, and the dynamic and static friction forces are equal, which can eliminate the crawling phenomenon of low speed or low pressure movement.

(4) Strong self-lubrication performance, can be used as an oil-free lubrication seal.

(5) Strong wear resistance, automatic elastic compensation function after sealing surface wear.

The optional material is diversified, the sealing effect is excellent, and the temperature range is wide.

O-Ring Material

There are dozens of O ring Materials such as Nature rubber (NR), Nitrile( Buna) (NBR), Viton (FKM/FPM), Silicone(VMQ), EPDM, AFLAS,  Fluoroether rubber (FFKM),  Neoprene, HNBR,  Fluorosilicone(FVMQ), PTFE (Teflon) ,Urethane, Chloroprene rubber (CR),  Polyurethane (AU/EU), Chlorohydrin rubber(CO/ECO/GECO), Butyl rubber (IIR), Polyethylene (AEM), Polyacrylate (ACM), SBR, etc.

O-Ring Hardness

O-ring hardness value in the range of 40 ~ 90IRHD, usually use 70IRHD, individual such as silicone rubber use 60IRHD. If the hardness is high, the installation will be very inconvenient; If the hardness is low, it is easy to have installation damage, product peeling, extrusion, and even pressure explosion.

O-Ring Application

O-rings are mainly used for static and reciprocating motion sealing application, are currently widely used in all kinds of mechanical equipment, such as cars, ships, aerospace, CNC machine tools, metallurgical machinery, chemical machinery, engineering machinery, mining machinery, construction machinery, petroleum machinery, agricultural machinery, plastics machinery and instrument etc., there are a lot of the different types of o-rings being used in these equipments.
